### Security Notes
**API Key Handling**
- βœ… Keys are **masked in logs**: First 4 + last 4 chars only
- βœ… Never commit `.env` to git (in `.gitignore`)
- βœ… Use environment variables in production
- ⚠️ Hardcoded fallback keys in code are **public tier** - safe to use but limited
**Rate Limiting**
- Monitor enforces delays between requests
- Scheduler respects `MAX_CONCURRENT` setting
- CORS proxies have their own limits (documented in code)
**Best Practices**
1. Rotate keys every 90 days
2. Use separate keys for dev/staging/prod
3. Enable key usage alerts in provider dashboards
4. Monitor rate limit consumption via `/history/stats`
5. Use backup keys for critical APIs (CMC, Etherscan)

#### Gradio Interface (Port 7860)
Gradio provides a web UI, not RESTful API. Accessible via:
- **Direct access**: http://localhost:7860
- **Tabs**: Dashboard, Analytics, History, Incidents, Settings
- **Actions**: Button clicks, dropdowns, sliders (not HTTP endpoints)
### Event/Message Schemas
**N/A** - This project does not use queues or WebSockets. All communication is HTTP request/response.
### Error Response Format
**Standard Error Shape (FastAPI)**
```json
{
"detail": "Category 'invalid_category' not found"
}
```
**HTTP Status Codes Used**
- `200 OK`: Successful request
- `404 Not Found`: Resource/category not found
- `422 Unprocessable Entity`: Invalid request body (Pydantic validation)
- `500 Internal Server Error`: Unexpected server error
---
## 7. Data Storage & Migrations
### Database Engines
**SQLite 3**
- Used for both `history.db` (FastAPI) and `health_metrics.db` (Gradio)
- File-based, no separate server needed
- Concurrent reads, sequential writes
- ACID compliant
### Connection Strings
**FastAPI (history.db)**
```python
conn = sqlite3.connect('history.db')
# No password, local file
```
**Gradio (health_metrics.db)**
```python
db_path = Path("data/health_metrics.db")
conn = sqlite3.connect(db_path)
# Configured via DATABASE_PATH env var
```
### Schema Overview

### Migrations
**No Migration System** - Tables are created automatically on first run via:
```python
# database.py - _init_database() method
def _init_database(self):
with self.get_connection() as conn:
cursor = conn.cursor()
cursor.execute("CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS status_log (...)")
# ... creates all tables
```
**How to Apply**
- Automatic on first app startup
- Database file created if not exists
- Schema upgraded via `CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS`
**How to Rollback**
```bash
# Delete database file
rm data/health_metrics.db
# App will recreate on next run
```
**Schema Changes**
To add columns:
```python
# In database.py _init_database()
cursor.execute("ALTER TABLE status_log ADD COLUMN new_field TEXT")
```
### Data Retention
**Automatic Cleanup** (scheduler.py)
```python
# Runs every scheduler cycle
self.database.cleanup_old_data(days=7)
```
- Deletes `status_log` records older than 7 days
- Deletes resolved incidents older than 7 days
- Deletes acknowledged alerts older than 7 days
- Configurable via `DATABASE_RETENTION_DAYS` env var
**Manual Cleanup**
```bash
sqlite3 data/health_metrics.db
> DELETE FROM status_log WHERE created_at < datetime('now', '-30 days');
> VACUUM;
```

## 8. Frontend Structure & Conventions
### Build System
**Node.js Monitor Dashboard**
- **Framework**: None (vanilla HTML/CSS/JavaScript)
- **Build**: Not required - `dashboard.html` is served directly
- **Server**: `python3 -m http.server 8080` or `npm run dashboard`
**Gradio Interface**
- **Framework**: Gradio 4.14.0
- **Build**: None (Gradio handles compilation internally)
- **Components**: Pre-built Gradio components (gr.DataFrame, gr.Plot, gr.Button, etc.)
### Routing
**dashboard.html** (No routing - single page)
- All content in one HTML file
- JavaScript handles dynamic updates
- Fetches `api-monitor-report.json` via AJAX
**Gradio** (Tab-based navigation)
```python
with gr.Blocks(theme=gr.themes.Soft()) as app:
with gr.Tab("Dashboard"):
# Dashboard components
with gr.Tab("Analytics"):
# Analytics components
# ... 5 tabs total
```
### State Management
**dashboard.html**
- No formal state management
- DOM updates via vanilla JavaScript
- Global variables for current report
**Gradio**
- Component state managed by Gradio framework
- Global variables for shared state:
```python
current_results = [] # Latest health check results
last_check_time = None
```
- Database serves as persistent state store
### Theming
**dashboard.html**
```css
/* Gradient background */
background: linear-gradient(135deg, #667eea 0%, #764ba2 100%);
/* Card shadows */
box-shadow: 0 10px 30px rgba(0,0,0,0.2);
/* Status colors */
.online { color: #10b981; }
.degraded { color: #f59e0b; }
.offline { color: #ef4444; }
```
**Gradio**
```python
gr.Blocks(theme=gr.themes.Soft())
# Uses Gradio's Soft theme
# Custom CSS can be added via css= parameter
```
### Component Conventions
**dashboard.html**
- BEM-like naming: `.stat-card`, `.category-section`
- Status badges: 🟒 🟑 πŸ”΄ (emoji)
- Responsive grid: `grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fit, minmax(250px, 1fr))`
**Gradio Components**
```python
# Naming convention: {purpose}_{type}
status_df = gr.DataFrame(label="Resource Status")
refresh_btn = gr.Button("Refresh", variant="primary")
category_dropdown = gr.Dropdown(choices=["All", ...], value="All")
```
### Where to Add Features
**New Tab in Gradio**
```python
# In app_gradio.py, after existing tabs
with gr.Tab("Your New Tab"):
with gr.Column():
gr.Markdown("## Your Feature")
# Add components
your_output = gr.Textbox()
your_button = gr.Button("Action")
# Wire up event handler
your_button.click(
fn=your_function,
inputs=[],
outputs=[your_output]
)
```
**New Chart in Analytics**
```python
# In app_gradio.py, create_analytics_charts() function
def create_analytics_charts():
# ... existing charts ...
# Add new chart
fig_new = px.bar(data, x='category', y='value', title="New Metric")
return fig_uptime, fig_response, fig_new # Add to return tuple
# Update outputs in analytics_tab
analytics_btn.click(
fn=create_analytics_charts,
outputs=[uptime_chart, response_chart, new_chart] # Add new output
)
```
**New Section in dashboard.html**
```html
<!-- After existing category sections -->
<div class="category-section">
<h2 class="category-title">πŸ“Š YOUR NEW SECTION</h2>
<div class="resource-grid" id="your-section">
<!-- JavaScript will populate this -->
</div>
</div>
```
```javascript
// In <script> section, add to renderReport()
function renderYourSection(data) {
const container = document.getElementById('your-section');
container.innerHTML = data.map(item => `
<div class="resource-card">...</div>
`).join('');
}
```

## 11. Extensibility Playbook
### How to Add a New API Endpoint (FastAPI)
**Step 1**: Define Pydantic model (if needed)
```python
# In app.py
class NewFeatureRequest(BaseModel):
param1: str
param2: Optional[int] = None
```
**Step 2**: Create endpoint function
```python
# In app.py
@app.post("/new-feature")
async def new_feature(request: NewFeatureRequest):
"""Your new feature"""
# Process request
result = process_feature(request.param1, request.param2)
# Log to database (optional)
log_query("new_feature", "custom", "", "success", 0.1)
return {
"success": True,
"data": result,
"timestamp": datetime.now().isoformat()
}
```
**Step 3**: Test endpoint
```bash
curl -X POST http://localhost:7860/new-feature \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"param1": "test", "param2": 123}'
```
### How to Add a New UI Page (Gradio Tab)
**Step 1**: Create tab in app_gradio.py
```python
# After existing tabs
with gr.Tab("Your New Feature"):
with gr.Column():
gr.Markdown("## New Feature Description")
# Input components
input_text = gr.Textbox(label="Input", placeholder="Enter value...")
process_btn = gr.Button("Process", variant="primary")
# Output components
output_result = gr.Textbox(label="Result", interactive=False)
output_chart = gr.Plot(label="Visualization")
# Wire up event handler
process_btn.click(
fn=your_processing_function,
inputs=[input_text],
outputs=[output_result, output_chart]
)
def your_processing_function(input_value: str):
"""Process the input and return results"""
# Your logic here
result_text = f"Processed: {input_value}"
# Create chart
fig = px.bar(x=['A', 'B', 'C'], y=[1, 2, 3])
return result_text, fig
```
**Step 2**: Test in browser
```bash
python app_gradio.py
# Open: http://localhost:7860
# Click "Your New Feature" tab
```
### How to Add a New Background Job (Scheduler)
**Step 1**: Create job function in scheduler.py
```python
# In scheduler.py
def _your_new_job(self):
"""Your scheduled task"""
try:
logger.info("Running your new job...")
# Your logic here
results = perform_task()
# Save to database
self.database.save_custom_data(results)
logger.info("Job completed successfully")
except Exception as e:
logger.error(f"Job failed: {e}")
```
**Step 2**: Schedule the job
```python
# In scheduler.py start() method
self.scheduler.add_job(
func=self._your_new_job,
trigger=IntervalTrigger(hours=1), # Every hour
id='your_job_id',
name='Your Custom Job',
replace_existing=True
)
```
**Step 3**: Test manually
```python
# In Python REPL
from scheduler import BackgroundScheduler
from monitor import APIMonitor
from database import Database
from config import config
monitor = APIMonitor(config)
db = Database()
scheduler = BackgroundScheduler(monitor, db)
# Trigger manually
scheduler._your_new_job()
```
### How to Add a New Third-Party Provider
**Step 1**: Add to `all_apis_merged_2025.json`
```json
{
"discovered_keys": {
"your_new_provider": "your_api_key_here"
},
"raw_files": [
{
"content": "YourProvider: your_api_key_here"
}
]
}
```
**Step 2**: Add resource definition in config.py
```python
# In config.py _load_fallback_resources() or parse logic
{
"category": "Market Data",
"name": "YourProvider",
"url": "https://api.yourprovider.com/v1",
"key": self.api_keys.get('your_new_provider', ''),
"free": False,
"rateLimit": "1000/day",
"desc": "Your provider description",
"endpoint": "/market/prices",
"tier": 2
}
```
**Step 3**: Add health check logic in monitor.py (if custom)
```python
# In monitor.py check_endpoint()
# Custom headers
if 'yourprovider' in provider_name.lower():
headers['X-API-KEY'] = api_key
headers['Custom-Header'] = 'value'
```
**Step 4**: Add to Node.js monitor (optional)
```javascript
// In api-monitor.js API_REGISTRY
marketData: {
yourprovider: [
{
name: 'YourProvider',
url: 'https://api.yourprovider.com/v1',
keyName: 'your_new_provider',
keyIndex: 0,
testEndpoint: '/health',
tier: 2
}
]
}
```
**Step 5**: Test the new provider
```bash
# Python test
python -c "from config import config; print(config.get_all_resources())"
# Full health check
python app_gradio.py
# Click "Run Health Check", verify new provider appears
```
### Code Style/Linting Conventions
**Python** (PEP 8)
- Use 4 spaces for indentation
- Maximum line length: 100 characters (flexible)
- Docstrings: Google style
```python
def function_name(param1: str, param2: int) -> bool:
"""
Brief description.
Args:
param1: Description of param1
param2: Description of param2
Returns:
Description of return value
"""
```
**JavaScript** (Informal)
- Use 2 spaces for indentation
- Single quotes for strings
- Semicolons required
- camelCase for variables
**Linting** (Not enforced, but recommended):
```bash
# Python
## 12. Risks, Limits, and TODOs
### Known Limitations
**1. SQLite Concurrency**
- ❌ **Issue**: SQLite locks during writes, blocking concurrent operations
- **Impact**: High-frequency writes may cause "database locked" errors
- **Mitigation**: Use WAL mode, add retry logic
- **TODO**: Consider PostgreSQL for production with >10 req/sec
**2. API Rate Limits**
- ❌ **Issue**: Free tier APIs have strict limits (e.g., CMC: 333/day)
- **Impact**: Frequent monitoring exhausts daily quota
- **Mitigation**: Implemented caching, configurable intervals
- **TODO**: Add rate limit tracking per provider, auto-throttle
**3. No Authentication**
- ❌ **Issue**: FastAPI/Gradio endpoints are public (no auth)
- **Impact**: Anyone can query your APIs, deplete rate limits
- **Mitigation**: Deploy on private HF Space or add IP whitelist
- **TODO**: Implement API key authentication for /query endpoint
**4. Single Point of Failure**
- ❌ **Issue**: If host goes down, entire service is unavailable
- **Impact**: No redundancy for critical monitoring
- **Mitigation**: Use managed platforms (HF Spaces has 99% uptime)
- **TODO**: Multi-region deployment (HF Spaces + Heroku)
**5. No Real-Time WebSockets**
- ❌ **Issue**: Gradio uses polling, not true real-time updates
- **Impact**: 30s delay before UI reflects new data
- **Mitigation**: Acceptable for monitoring use case
- **TODO**: Consider FastAPI WebSocket for push updates
### Technical Debt
**1. Hardcoded API Keys**
- **Location**: `config.py` lines 36-44, `api-monitor.js` (in JSON)
- **Issue**: Keys committed to repo (safe for public tier, but bad practice)
- **TODO**: Remove all hardcoded keys, enforce env var usage
**2. No Unit Tests**
- **Coverage**: ~0% (only integration tests)
- **Issue**: Refactoring risks breaking existing features
- **TODO**: Add pytest suite with 80% coverage target
**3. Magic Numbers**
- **Examples**: Timeouts (10s), intervals (5 min), retention (7 days)
- **Issue**: Hard to tune without code changes
- **TODO**: Move to config file or database
**4. Mixed Languages**
- **Issue**: Node.js + Python requires two runtimes
- **TODO**: Rewrite api-monitor.js in Python for consistency
**5. No Logging Infrastructure**
- **Issue**: Logs go to stdout, no structured logging or aggregation
- **TODO**: Add structured logging (JSON), ship to external service (Datadog, ELK)
### Security Concerns
**1. API Key Exposure**
- ⚠️ **Risk**: Keys visible in logs (first/last 4 chars)
- **Mitigation**: Mask in logs, use secrets managers
- **TODO**: Integrate with HF Secrets, AWS Secrets Manager
**2. SQL Injection** (Low risk)
- ⚠️ **Risk**: SQL queries use parameterized statements (safe)
- **Status**: βœ… Not vulnerable (using `?` placeholders)
**3. SSRF via /query Endpoint**
- ⚠️ **Risk**: User could query internal services via CORS proxy
- **Mitigation**: Whitelist allowed base URLs
- **TODO**: Add URL validation, block private IPs (192.168.*, 10.*, 127.*)
**4. DoS via Rate Limit Exhaustion**
- ⚠️ **Risk**: Attacker spams /query, exhausts API quotas
- **Mitigation**: None currently
- **TODO**: Add rate limiting (Flask-Limiter), API key per user
### Rate Limit Exposure
**Current Limits** (Free Tiers):
| Provider | Limit | Monitoring Impact | Status |
|----------|-------|-------------------|--------|
| **CoinGecko** | 10-30/min | βœ… Safe (1 call/5min) | OK |
| **CoinMarketCap** | 333/day | ⚠️ At risk (288 calls/day @ 5min interval) | **High usage** |
| **Etherscan** | 5/sec, 100K/day | βœ… Safe (1 call/5min) | OK |
| **NewsAPI** | 100/day | ⚠️ At risk if queried frequently | Monitor closely |
| **Infura** | 100K/day | βœ… Safe | OK |
**Mitigation**:
- βœ… Caching (60s TTL) reduces duplicate calls
- βœ… Configurable intervals (5 min default)
- ❌ **TODO**: Track usage per provider, alert at 80% threshold
### Single Points of Failure (SPOFs)
**Identified SPOFs**:
1. **Database File** (`health_metrics.db`)
- Risk: Corruption or deletion loses all history
- Mitigation: Daily backups (not implemented)
- TODO: Add automated backup to S3/cloud storage
2. **Scheduler Thread**
- Risk: If APScheduler crashes, monitoring stops
- Mitigation: Gradio restarts on crash
- TODO: Add health check endpoint for scheduler status
3. **Single API Key per Provider**
- Risk: If Etherscan key banned, no Ethereum data
- Mitigation: Backup keys implemented for CMC, Etherscan
- TODO: Auto-rotate to backup on 429 errors
4. **Dependency on Hugging Face**
- Risk: If HF Spaces has outage, service down
- Mitigation: Can deploy to Heroku/Railway
- TODO: Multi-cloud deployment script
